“One time I was at the Grammys and a girl came up to me and asked for my autograph,” Deschanel, 31, tells Extra. “And then she was like…’What??’ I was like, ‘Oh, I know who you’re looking for. She’s over there.’”
While Deschanel says Perry, 26, is “beautiful” and therefore doesn’t mind the case of mistaken identity, back in 2009 she had some choice words to say about the comparisons.
“It’s a little bit annoying, to be totally blunt. The only similarity that we have is that we look a little bit alike,” she told MTV. “I have met her before. She seems like a nice person. I’m happy that she’s famous enough now that she’s not going out and being mistaken for me.”
That last line gets even more interesting when Deschanel adds, “I used to get, ‘I heard you were out at such-and-such club drinking whiskey!’ [when] I was at home watching TV. I think we lead very different lives. At some point I feel like this will stop being a thing. I like the way my life goes. It’s sort of strange to be associated with someone that’s doing such different stuff than me. It’s weird.”
Katy Perry, for her part, is busy breaking records (she recently secured her place in pop history as the first female artist to score five number one hit singles from the same album on the Billboard’s Hot 100 U.S. Chart, sharing the title with Michael Jackson) while Deschanel’s new TV series New Girl premieres Thursday, September 20 on FOX.
