P/S: This entry is written by me and my other half.
Believe it or not, it takes both mental and physical exhaustion to reach the heights of a star award. Besides being involved in many dramas and exposure, simply factors such as timing and coordination also count.
Quality over quantity, the actors/actresses have to give their utter best in every drama they star in, be it a simple support cast or the main lead. If they decide that quantity is over quality, then perhaps they will most likely not be liked by the general audience.
As for exposure, various courses and even tickets to other countries might be needed to expose them and turn them into a true Mediacorp star fit for the star award.
However, I was extremely disappointed when Zoe Tay did not make it into the top 10 most popular artiste trophy award this year as she has already bagged ten consecutive top 10 awards.
Other actors/actresses, such as Li Nanxing and Chew Chor Meng who have bagged this award ten consecutive times are also not allowed to qualify for this category anymore.
However, get rid of your disappointment! For they will win a rather unique award after they hit the magic ten. What is it, you might ask? Well, it is none other than the all-time favorite award!
This will represent that they have been chosen by the general audience for the top 10 award more than ten times. In other words, this will prove both their worth and popularity.
However, I do pity the three popular figures of Caldecott. Once, they have held the crown of glory and the staff of pride. Does this mean they will no longer be able to grab ahold of it?
Also, with them gone, will they be further alienated from the younger generations? What will they say if we ask them who Zoe Tay was in five years time? Will they either simply shrug their puny shoulders or will they shout and scream in joy? Somehow, I think the answer would lie with the former if this continues.
Due to this new rule, many fans, including me, are incredibly upset, and are ready to begin a revolution filled with riots and the writing of new rules for the star awards. Demands shall be made and each shall be fulfilled without any questions!
Jack Neo, our very own Singapore actor turn director, and the man behind the famous local movies, I Not Stupid and the Best Bet, will not be receiving the Top 10 Most Popular Artiste trophy at the Star Awards this year too.
He wants his fans to concentrate on his directing efforts. With already receiving the Top 10 awards 6 consecutive times, he already proved himself worthy and popular.
With those four big names out of Top 10 most popular artiste awards, will those artistes who were nominated times and times again in the previous years finally have their chance of getting the trophy?
I ponder.
I hereby announced my predictions for the Top 10 Most popular awards. If I am wrong, do not 'boo' me. *Laugh*
Without a doubt, Fann Wong, Xiang Yun, Sharon Au and Phyllis Quek will be in the top 10. They have always been consistent especially Fann Wong who has a large fan base both in Singapore and Taiwan.
With the support from her fans, I doubt she will not receive the Top 10 popular female artiste. If that happens, you can expect a World War III!
Our popular rising star, Jeanette Aw may stand a chance of bringing the Top 10 trophy home since she is well-liked and the favorite of many people.
Ever since she starred in the hit television drama series, Holland V as the blur and naive Mo Jing Jing, she has earned herself many supporters and respect for her acting skills.
With 5 names already predicted, who will the other 5 be?
Chen Liping and Pan Ling Ling who were ousted from last year's top 10 may emerged victorious this time round, proving others that they are worthy of bagging those trophies.
And with Michelle Saram, our unexpected winner for last year's Top 10, and Zoe Tay, our undisputed winner, out of the Top 10 list, the stake has raised. It's anyone's game right now.
Fiona Xie who started out as a nurse in growing up, was recorgnised for her great acting skills and was pledged a full-time artiste in 2001. All her hard work within the year 2001 was recognised when she bagged two awards (Best Newcomer and Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes) at Star Awards 2001.
Will she able to bag the top 10 trophy this year or will she falls behind again?
Joanne Peh, our very own Lux girl, was finally nominated in the top 20 most popular female artiste category. She may just squeeze her way into the top 10 with her silky shiny hair blinding us and outshining the rest.
Huang Biren and Ivy Lee will most likely be vying for the last spot for the top 10 most popular female artiste award. Both of them are equally good but if you were to ask me who proves more worthy, I would have to go with Huang Biren.
The dark horses for the Top 10 popular female artistes are Vivian Lai and Priscelia Chan. So never to let your guard down when you're around these two charming ladies.
As for the Top 10 male artiste category, my best bet would be Christopher Lee, Tay Ping Hui, Vincent Ng, Terence Chao, Edmund Chen, Xie Shao Guang and Chen Hanwei. They are of course the A-List stars and with their ever-growing popularity, without a doubt, they may bagged the trophy.
First-timer Qi Yuwu will bring home the trophy with ease as the youngsters nowadays are interested in good-looking and nice bod guys. So it would not be a surprise if Qi Yuwu manage to get the award.
Comedians, Gurmit Singh and Mark Lee would be the last two to get the trophy. As for the others I did not mention, they just could not make the cut.
My best card for winning the best host award would go to Sharon Au. However with the appearance of Michelle Chiong, who is the host for 'All In Nets' there seems to be another competitor for the same award.
Nevertheless, both of them are good.
May Phua, who is nominated in the best supporting actress category might just bring home the trophy as she had put in 100% effort in her convincing role in the drama series, An Ode to Life.
Patricia Mok who won the best supporting actress for acting as Mo Ling Ling, a kind-hearted lady who had to tolerate her rowdy husband in Holland V last year was not nominated in the best supporting actress category this time round.
Not to fret, she is still nominated in the Best comedy performer category this year. Hopefully she would bag that award.
But with Mark Lee nominated in the same category as Patricia Mok, her chances of winning might not be easy.
Zhang Wen Xiang and Jeff Wang who were nominated in the Best Supporting Actor have a slight lead against the rest as they had showcase great acting skills for their roles in Double Happiness I and Timeless Gift respectively.
Suspense grabs everyone by the neck as people quiver in anticipation. Will Double Happiness I be a useless flop? Or will An Ode To Life be going into the dust bin and proclaimed useless?
However, without surprise, Double Happiness I has chalked up the most nominations this year, most noticeably, best drama, best actor (Xie Shaoguang), best actress (Ivy Lee and Xiang Yun), best supporting actor (Jeff Wang), best supporting actress (Hong Huifang and Vivian Lai) and young talent award (Li Xianmin).
As for the Best Actress category, it will be a toss between Jeanette Aw and Xiang Yun. However, this will be a second shot for Jeanette Aw in grabbing the best actress trophy since last year.
Xie Shao Guang who has won twice in the best actor category may claim his trophy again this year. But Edmund Chen who had displayed a good acting skills in Man At Forty may just suprise us as well.
Well whoever do not win, they are not sore losers. They're just run out of luck.
Numbers will start with 1900-112-80**
