The Top 5 National Day Songs of all time

Over the course of the early 2000s, we were brought up in primary school with a series of beautiful National Day theme songs - whatever happened to all of them?! As we approach Singapore's 49th birthday this coming 9th August, let us reflect back on the top 5 National Day songs that have moved our ears and souls the past decade.

#1 Home

Originally sung by Kit Chan, Home can simply be classified as an all time favourite. I mean, who wouldn't resonate with its calm and beautiful melody and lyrics? So relatable it was that even the annual Pinkdot in Singapore, an LGBT 'movement', would play it during one of the segments, emphasising on the part where Kit sings 'This is Home, Truly, where I know I must be...', with the intention of delivering the message that Singapore is where we want to be and that if it is indeed our home, then no one should be excluded from it. Think about it and reflect, wasn't it nice when your music teacher in primary school handed out the lyrics to this hit and you had to learn it by heart for a choir's recital?

#2 Where I Belong

The celebratory hit first popularised by Tanya Chua still rings in our hearts whenever we talk about theme songs, with its catchy tune and Tanya's mellow voice, it truly one hard to forget. With lyrics such as the much-loved chorus' 'where I belong, where I keep my heart and soul, where dreams come true for us', it was a hit favourite during, well at least, my Primary 3 days where everyone would jump on their feet in serious anticipation in response to the song being played. With similar meanings to 'Home', 'Where I Belong' highlights the importance of Singapore being the place that you would give your all and strive to achieve your best.

#3 We Will Get There

Stephanie Sun made her debut National Day performance with this hit with an inclination to pop. With a nostalgic beginning with angelic guitar strummings, it leads on to a booming chorus with encouraging lyrics such as 'look where we are, we've come so far, and there's still a long long way to go...' The hit is  one with much focus on what we have managed to achieve in the past decades of our lives in Singapore and that given our resources, talents and united spirits, we'd still have so much to accomplish and we as a young nation have a bright future ahead of us.

#4 Reach Out For The Skies

A major hit with Rui En and pioneer Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah, the 2005 theme song still brings back fond memories of that very year. I feel it is in fact the most upbeat hit amongst all the other theme songs, and with its uplifting tune, it syncs with its lyrics such as 'our dreams we'll all achieve, let's soar and reach for the skies'. Bringing the same innuendos as 'We Will Get There', it seems our composers place high regard for Singapore's united passion for constant progress and development. A real featured hit, this one is not to be forgotten.

#5 Moments of Magic

Written by celebrated artist Ken Lim and produced by Fann Wong, Tanya Chua and Elsa Lin, it was quite a catchy one during the start of the millennium. Focusing more on Singapore's unity and togetherness, its lyrics include 'we will always be a city of friends, time will bring for us to share moments of magic'. I guess moments of 'magic' include the great possibility of multiculturalism and our diversified population, with the imbibed value of tolerance and acceptance. Yet another upbeat number, this one is a great choice for sing-alongs with your buddies who have a knack for sentiment.
