Nothing is as authentic as secret recipes handed down from generation to generation. At Ban Khun Mae (which translates as Mom's House), you can enjoy authentic Thai cuisine. With nightly live traditional Thai music performances from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm. This food landmark is widely recognised by various nationalities, and mentioned in many guide books, including the Bangkok Lonely Planet.
Baan Khun Mae oozes Thainess through its every sculpted wooden panel, its white and blue crockery, its aunties shaping dumplings behind a wall of jars filled with relishes, its display of chuam (vegetables boiled in syrup), its classical musician (daily at 7pm) and its staff in traditional outfits.
Tourists love it, and you do get the occasional table of well-to-do Thais. But for Baan Khun Mae to be a hit with locals it would have to seriously overhaul its service and parts of its menu. Waving desperately to nab the otherwise fairly competent waiters is a kind of Olympic sport here, and when queues form at the entrance, some people will just cut into the dining room.
Love the Thai Ice Tea. Total sweetness.
Their food can be very very spicy and the chilis next to the menu really mean it. 1 chilli can actually signify 3. Better to always ask them to tone down the dishes with a chill logo unless you like a nice long slow burn.
Hot and clear spicy soup. coconut soup, Paenang Shrimps, Green curry, Prok holy Basil and Sate all very good. Mango Sticky rice also excellent.
Pricing very cheap compared to malls and other restaurants nearby and with beer will cost you about 500 BT per head all in (less if you don't stuff yourself silly).
