Hong Kong Day 2: Times Square & Chai Wan

Times Square (時代廣場) is a major shopping centre and office tower complex in Causeway BayHong Kong IslandHong Kong.

Mirroring its namesake in New York City, the plaza in front of the building is one of two main gathering points, along with the harbour, for Western New Year celebrations in Hong Kong. In the hours leading up to 00:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the area is packed with revelers waiting for the midnight countdown, which is done by the "lowering" of lights on a wall.

Admiralty is the eastern extension of central business district (adjacent to, but separate from, Central) on the Hong Kong Island of Hong Kong. It is located on the eastern end of the Central and Western District, bordered by Wan Chai to the east and Victoria Harbour to the north. The name of Admiralty refers to the former Admiralty Dock in the area which housed a naval dockyard. The dock was later demolished when land was reclaimed and developed northward as the HMS Tamar naval base. The Chinese name, Kam-chung (金鐘), lit. Golden Bell, refers to a golden bell once housed at the dock.

If you are going to Chai wan, you may want to visit X Game. X Game is what you get when you convert two warehouse units into a large space and fill it with accessories, apparel and equipment for surfers, skaters, skiers, snowboarders, wakeboarders and kitesurfers. The shop holds true to its name for supplying all the equipment people need for extreme sports. X Game has locations in Causeway Bay and Mong Kok, but you can’t beat the headquarters here, where they even have their own in-store half-pipe for customers to get extreme on. Unit 1201-02, 12/F, Chai Wan Industrial City, Phase 1, 60 Wing Tai Rd, 2366 9293; xgamehk.com

Also visit Chaiwanese.

Popular with the cool Chai Wan creative crowd, this warehouse coffee shop and eatery serves up the café staples of sandwiches, soups, salads and pastas, to be enjoyed in the open, airy space overlooking the water. It’s the only food and beverage outlet of its kind in the area but that’s not the main reason we keep coming here. Customers usually sing their praises for the coffee but it’s the refreshing ice lemon tea that’s light on the sweetness that has us sighing in satisfaction. Unit 1307, 13/F, Chai Wan Industrial City, Phase 1, 60 Wing Tai Rd, 6111 4583; chaiwanese.com
