This natural gas outlet is quite a cool sight, but has been a bit run down by tourists. Natural gas pours out through fissures in the ground and is ignited when it reaches the surface.
Tour buses flock here all day long, vendors sell popcorn and sweet potatoes that you can cook on the natural flames. Night time is pretty special, when the mass of orange flames lights up the area, and the many visitors cook food and enjoy the party atmosphere.
Chuhuo is located just past Hengchun's east gate. The local topography is made up of mudstone. There are many cracks in the mudstone through which natural gases are emitted.
If there is a fire source, these gases can be ignited in the summer and fall.
During the rainy season, these cracks and crevices become filled with water. Thus, to experience the ignition of natural gases it is best to visit this area during spring and dry seasons.
