YWQ Vegetarian Bistro

Yuan Wei Quan (YWQ Vegetarian Bistro) is just about 1.5 month old when we visited the restaurant. It is located in the newly constructed CT Hub, opposite Bendeemer MRT which is under construction. As this building is relatively new, this place is really quiet with only a handful of shops opened at the moment.

What does a “vegetarian diet” mean? The term “vegetarian” is really a misnomer, since vegetarians eat more than just vegetables. Vegetarian simply means a plant-based diet. There are several kinds of vegetarian diets, defined by what types of foods are consumed.

Looks like we finally have a food trend that both vegetarians as well as non-vegetarians will vouch for. If you love eating meat on a regular basis, but don’t want to include it in every meal, you can now opt for mock meats, a vegetarian substitute for real meat.

These substitutes are usually made with wheat gluten or soy! Just like regular meat, they try and mimic its chewy texture and are a very good source of protein, minus the cholesterol found in non-vegetarian meat!

The mock fish from YWQ is thin and crispy, made of beancurd skin and seaweed. It does not seems to be those store-bought mock fish. The Teriyaki sauce did wonders to the mock fish. It adds those extra flavors.

They are healthier as they don’t contain animal fat and usually have fiber, which is absent in animal products. Be it faux franks or fish made from seaweed — you have a wide variety of mock meats to choose from.

Mock meats taste like meat but they are textured vegetable proteins  made from soy. People who are health-conscious are resorting to mock meats. After all, it has health benefits — it is light on the stomach and easier to digest.

It can give you flavours similar to meat. Moreover, it is a great option for people who want to taste meat but can’t do so due to religious constraints.

The Claypot Curry Fish.
The curry's really very thick and spicy.

After tasting some of the food, I would recommend you to visit YWQ Vegetarian Bistro.
YWQ Vegetarian Bistro is located one bus stop away from Lavendar MRT or three bus stop away from Boon Keng MRT. When Bendeemer MRT is completed, it will be more convenient for patrons to come to YWQ.
