Taiwan’s pop superstar A-mei will perform for free on Sunday in order to draw attention for the need to allow same-sex couples to marry
Taiwanese pop star A-mei is going to perform a concert in Taipei on Sunday, and not only will it be free but she is picking up the cost of putting the concert on as well.
‘No slogans, no posters that night. I want to use music to give people who are pursuing respect and true love the courage to continue,’ A-mei wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday.
‘I want to cheer for every single heart that is defending true love … This is a small effort I can make as a singer.’
The concert will cost around US$100,000 to put on and A-mei will be covering the costs out of her own pocket instead of relying on sponsors.
A draft of a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt passed its first reading in the Legislative Yuan in October but thousands of opponents took to the streets to protest it last year.
The concert is being held at Huashan 1914 Creative Park on Sunday, with doors opening at 6pm.
