There was a lot of hype about Dec 21, 2012, that we were all
going to die. We didn’t. So we’re happy. But there’s actually something that’s
indeed facing the end times, something that we love so dearly – PRECIOUS FOOD.
Yes, with climate change, unfavourable conditions and
natural disasters, noble farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to
harvest crops and more importantly, delicious and nutritious produce that, as a
result of which, are on the rise in price.
So what are these? Let’s take a close look:
1)
Chocolate
– Most chocs come from places like Ghana and the Ivory Coast, where new
temperature and rainfall patterns threaten cacao crops.
2)
Strawberries
– Cool northern areas where strawberries thrive are likely to heat up.
Researchers are trying to adjust by breeding a more weather-resistant berry,
but at what cost?
3)
Coffee
– Changes in rainfall, hurricanes, and crop depletion are threatening coffee.
Now a business coalition is worried and pushing hard for reforms.
4)
Beer
& Wine – Germany is suffering water shortages for growing hops and
barley for beer. And in France, a perfect climate for wine grapes may soon be
lost.
5)
Trout
& Salmon – Warm water may be good for beach-goers, but not for
cold-water fish like trout and salmon, which will face competition from more
adaptable fish.
6)
Maple
Syrup – Acid Rain, unpredictable weather, and insect infestations are
threatening the delicate production of maple syrups. There goes our pancakes
for breakfast.
So it turns out that food is big business, we
gotta do what we can to reverse climate changes, and to maintain our occasional
gastronimical orgasms, there is a price to pay for it. Make your choice.
