Nantou, Taiwan: The Old England

We had to pose in front of our hotel. It looks like a CASTLE!

We were driven to The Old England which was situated 1km away from our hotel. Although 1km may be a short distance, it is actually quite far because it is a downslope. To get down from our hotel to Old England was much easier than us getting back up to our hotel.

The Old England is a boutique hotel that seems to transcend time, geography, and history. Although it was just recently built in 2011, when you walk in you’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back into 18th century England.

Tucked away in Chingjing Datong Village of Nantou Country, The Old England is a historically themed hotel that was built and decorated to emulate the poise and class of English culture.

The hotel’s exterior appears to be a blend of Tudor and Victorian era architecture, with flourishing pointed towers and hints of Gothic revival. Out of all its structures, the most famous would most likely be the Bell Tower.

Modeled after bell towers found commonly in English town squares of centuries past, it towers over the rest of the manor, making for a rather interesting juxtaposition with the rest of the Taiwanese skyline. To add to its authenticity, all décor is imported straight from England; some of it is even antique!

Don’t worry though; while the style of the hotel is aged, its amenities are not. The Old England offers free WiFi and LAN access, as well as television and a minibar in all of its 19 spacious bedrooms.
